On the Other Side of the Lens

If you don't recognize the person in these photos, let me introduce myself!  Hi, I'm Kitty, the photographer behind Lady Grey Photography! Photo credit here goes to my husband, Kevin. He is my second shooter whenever I need a photographer for weddings or other events. He is fabulous :) Kevin has a degree in graphic design, and taught me just about everything I know when it comes to Photoshop. I was not a good student either, I hated learning Photoshop because it was so different than anything I'd ever worked with. Now it seems like second nature to me! Back to my post. I think it is so important for a portrait photographer to get on the other side of the lens every now and again. Why? Because I can forget that my clients aren't models, they don't know where to stand, how to pose and I forget the feeling some of them may be feeling when they get in front of a camera.  I do that too. If only we had captured this session on video, you would have heard

J & D

Congratulations to J & D one of my fall weddings this year! These two were a blast to photograph. Both seemed a little hesitant to have photos taken, but by the end of the session, they were naturals! I will admit, during this session I stepped in goose "stuff" with my bare foot, and inhaled a bug while chatting...not exactly I prefer my sessions to go :) That being said, we had a great time. I love getting to know couples before their weddings, so they get accustomed working with me (and I get to know their personalities too!) before the big day!  Can't wait to be there to capture your big day!

Snapshot of Your Photographer

I love that so many of my clients come back to me time and time again for more photos, and its been so much fun getting to know so many of you. I'd like to share a little more about your photographer! I'm hoping to give you a snapshot into my life on a more regular basis, and use it to tell you more about myself! Here we go!  So here is where the photo processing magic happens. My husband is a graphic designer, and with my need for perfected photo editing we share the Mac when it comes to our work projects.  So this is our work place.  I'll use this photo to tell you a little more about ourselves.  1. We love our cat. We got Lady Grey about a year ago, she was a stray that the Humane Society picked up. We fell in love right when we saw her. It took a few days to name her, but because of our love of Twinning tea...we went with Lady Grey. She has such a strong personality, and so naughty! Our photography business and our etsy page is both named after her!

J & Y Wedding

This weekend I had the opportunity to capture the celebration of two newlyweds! They were married in China not long ago, and came back to the groom's home state to celebrate with his family and friends here! The reception was beautiful and all the guests were thrilled to be celebrating with these two.  Congratulations to J & Y!

The M Family

The M Family gathered everyone together for big family photos this week! Some of the family even made it in town from Hawaii! This family was awesome. I had no problem finding lots of pictures of the kiddos smiling (and the parents were pretty cooperative too!). We had a whole hour session, and the kids didn't complain once, just happy smiles the whole time!

The G Family

I've known this family for a very long time, and they've always been so wonderful! I went to school with these guys, and it was such a treat catching up with everyone. The oldest was in swing choir with me in high school, and I still feel bad for him for always being forced to be my dance partner (dancing I've never excelled at!) This family showed me a great time tonight, and an excellent new location for photo sessions! Such a lovely family!

J & C

I feel like the majority of my sessions lately have been little kids. Of course I love children, and have a passion for photographing their budding personalities...but some days its nice to have a couple that will simply follow a few directions. This was not that couple :) Just kidding. J & C were so much fun to photograph. I've grown up with this young lady for about as long as I can remember, and I've enjoyed catching up with her and see how much she loves life! These two have been married 6 years, and still act more in love than some of the engaged couples I have to pleasure of photographing! They were amazing, such a delight and the camera loved them too!

My Photoshop Love/Hate

Photoshop is my editing program of choice. Why do I love it? It's good. Once you learn how to use it (I've been using is 3-4 years and still learn something new every day) it can be a huge tool. Why do I hate it sometimes? There is something about a photo, unedited, that can be so beautiful. Babies don't have perfectly smooth faces, sometimes the light lets in a little extra blue...it's life! I've been working over the last few years, learning to edit less and make my photos more natural. What else do I think about photoshop? Sometimes I think clients can be a little unrealistic as to what I can do (or how much time it takes me to do something) in photoshop. I get things like "you can edit out this water spill down the front of my shirt" or editing closed eyes open, and people in the background of a downtown photo session. Its a rarity to get too many crazy demands, but I love my job because I get to take a snapshot of the world around us, and kee

Baby C

Oh for the love of babies. Baby C is one month old, and as cute as she can be! She is the fourth child for the J Family, and I've been told her siblings take very good care of her. We scheduled a session that coincidentally fell on a time where the rest of the J family was out of the house, and we had the whole place to take photos. I'm sure little Baby C enjoyed the quite, as she napped very hard during our session.  I love visiting client's homes for baby sessions. Everyone is in their element, Baby C didn't have to deal with a bumpy car ride and being jostled around right before her session. She did so wonderfully! What a doll!

J & E- 1 Year

Congratulations to J & E who celebrated their first year anniversary last week. We went out early saturday morning to catch the sunrise in the photos. Unfortunately the clouds prevented much of a glow, but that didn't stop us from continuing with our photo session!

Baby J- 6 weeks

I love seeing how a new mom and dad delight in the joys of their precious little bundle! Each couple is different, and this little guy was so much fun! All he wanted to do was to be held by mom and dad. No sleeping in this session, he was wide awake and loving the outdoors!
